What is Better Broadband?

Picture

1. It's FAST

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has determined that the minimum standard for broadband internet is 25 Mbps (megabits per second) download speeds and 3 Mbps upload. But for many users, much higher speeds are required. Gigabit internet (1,000 Mbps) is quickly becoming the standard for broadband.

2. It's RELIABLE

The fastest internet service in the world does you no good if frequent outages make it unavailable when its needed. Modern broadband networks utilize fiber optics because they are much more reliable than copper-based networks. And having local service technicians means that when things to go wrong, service can be restored more quickly.

3. It's AFFORDABLE

A few years ago, high-speed internet service was considered a luxury. Now, most families and businesses consider it an absolute necessity. And like other necessities in life, if it's too expensive some will be left behind and unable to enjoy the benefits it provides.

4. It's UNIVERSALLY AVAILABLE

Some broadband technologies create "haves" and "have nots" based on geographical location, even within the city limits of the same community. Also, because new networks are expensive to build, providers will sometimes pass by areas if they can't get a quick enough return on their investment.  We believe that all citizens should have access to broadband for their educational, entertainment, and business needs - regardless of where they live.

Why Better Broadband Matters

Just like access to reliable electric power was vital to communities at the beginning of the 20th century, broadband is a key to growth and success in 21st century communities. Without access to fast, affordable, reliable, universally-available broadband services, communities are at risk of being left behind in the modern world.

Education

Today's learners of all ages are dependent on broadband, both in the school and in the home. The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that some students did not have sufficient internet bandwidth to complete homework or engage in remote education.

Jobs

Businesses and industries are using broadband for everything from email to cloud computing. Access to excellent broadband is a key to retaining existing businesses and attracting new ones.

Businesses are also becoming increasingly reliant on remote work from their employers. While remote work was made necessary by COVID-19, it was also shown to bring efficiencies to many businesses and likely to grow in the future.

Health Care

Telehealth is a top priority for health care institutions. Delivering health care via broadband reduces costs and improves services.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people were first exposed to remote health services. From simple checkups via a video chat to more complicated types of health care, telehealth requires a reliable and fast internet connection.

Quality of Life

Access to excellent broadband has become a key requirement for persons deciding where to live, work, and play.

Persons in the market for a new pace to live are likely to place access to broadband near the top of their "must have" lists. Having fiber optic broadband available has even been shown to raise residential property values by up to 3%.
